Almonds are not just a favourite Christmas treat when enveloped in raw cocoa or caramelized in sugar – moreover they are a well-recognized powerhouse providing valuable amounts of both macro, -and micronutrients and have been associated with positive health effects when consumed regularly.
Nuts make up an essential part of the paleo diet – in fact, the paleo lifestyle cannot be imagined without a daily intake of deliciously healthy nuts. Nuts are a real powerhouse of nutrients: besides healthy fats they provide valuable amounts of protein, digestion improving fibre, anti-inflammatory phytochemicals as well as important vitamins and minerals.
Almonds are particularly rich in important micronutrients such as magnesium, calcium, copper as well as vitamin B and E. Thanks to this most favourable combination, almonds unfold various positive health effects. One that has been gaining a lot of scientific attention, is the nut’s ability to lower blood cholesterol, which is generally associated with a reduced risk for cardio-vascular diseases. This health claim is based on an intervention study, where a diet supplemented with 60 grams of almonds per day yielded an overall reduction in cholesterol values after only 4 weeks of intake. In addition, a reduction in blood pressure could be observed. All in all, almonds have proven themselves to be highly effective in relation to treating various symptoms of the metabolic syndrome, including obesity, diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol levels.
